Living away from home? How to send a cake to your parents in Asansol

Some of my favourite orders come from people who aren't in Asansol at all. A son working in Bangalore. A daughter in Pune. Someone in Kolkata who couldn't get leave this time. The message is usually short — "Ma's birthday is on Friday, can you send a cake home?" — and I always know there's a lot more feeling behind it than the words.

Being away on your parents' birthday or anniversary is hard. A cake doesn't fix that. But your mother opening the door to a cake you chose for her, with her name on it, is still a very good moment. So here is exactly how it works when you order from outside Asansol.

How to order from another city

Everything happens on WhatsApp. You don't need to call or visit. Just send me:

• The date, and roughly what time your parents will be home
• Your parents' address in Asansol, and the area name
• A phone number at home I can call before I reach
• Size, or how many people will be there
• Flavour, and a photo if you have a design in mind
• The name or message you want written on the cake

I'll reply with the price, including delivery, so you know the full amount before paying.

How much notice I need

This is the one thing I ask everyone to keep in mind. I'm a home baker and I bake every cake fresh after the order comes in. Nothing is kept ready.

• Regular cakes: please tell me at least 12 hours before
• Custom or designed cakes: please message 1–2 days before

I can't do 2-hour or instant delivery. If you're planning a surprise, please don't wait for the last evening. Message a day or two early, and you can relax.

Paying from outside

You can pay by UPI — Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm. Delivery is charged at actual cost depending on how far the house is, and I tell you that amount with the cake price, never after.

Keeping it a surprise

If it's a surprise, tell me. I'll still need a number at home to call so the cake isn't left outside, but we can work out together whose number to use — a sibling, a neighbour, or your father if the cake is for your mother.

Choosing a cake for parents

Parents usually aren't asking for a tall fondant cake. Most of the time they want something that tastes good and that everyone at home can eat. Every cake I make is 100% eggless, so that's one thing you don't have to check — it's fine for vegetarian family members too.

A few things that work well for home celebrations:

• A 1 pound cake for a small family cake-cutting at home
• A [bento cake](https://sweetbloombakery.shop/cakes/bento) if it's just your parents — small, sweet, and less wastage
• Simple flavours like chocolate, butterscotch or mango, which most elders enjoy
• A short message with their name, or the number of years for an anniversary
